November 2014

The school has initiated a new program called "15 Minutes". This is an opportunity for students to make a 15 minute presentation about a topic that interests them or about someone/something that is important to them. Today Dyrrell Moon, looking sharp in his science lab coat, presented about noted astrophysicist Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson. Dyrrell is interested in pursuing this career and explained to the class an outline of what is involved. He performed an experiment and also showed a brief video on the origins of the universe. It was a terrific presentation and great start to this new program....

Co-Anchors Kelsey Larrimore and Daj'a White recorded the 2nd news broadcast of the new weekly feature, TCS Student news. They covered stories that included the recent murder of student protestors in Mexico and an update on the kidnapping of the schoolgirls by Boko Haram.  They even gave a weekend weather forecast and a health report....

The 2nd Sponsor Meeting of the school year will be held on Wednesday, October 15th at 7:00. All are welcome....

Students and sponsors are selling candy bars to raise money for the school. They have a great assortment of the most popular candy bars and snacks for only $1 each....

Tonight, the first two student-sponsor meetings of the new year were held.  Each of these new students and their families displayed such eagerness and enthusiasm for their future at The Community School.  It is a reminder of the great potential that exists in our youth, their families, and our community.  We are not a big school, but I wouldn't trade this new group of students for any others.  It's going to be a terrific year!...

We are excited to announce that incoming 9th grader Dyrrell Moon has been awarded a full scholarship to participate in the 2014 High School Conservatory at Single Carrot Theatre.  This theatre group is newly located in our home community of Remington and has been in conversation with The Community School for months about how our organizations can work together. The conservatory is a two week program whose purpose is "to enrich young actors with the building blocks needed to become well-rounded theatre artists." We are very thankful to Jessica Garrett and all of the folks at Single Carrot Theatre.  Congratulations Dyrrell!...

The classroom was packed with new students and their families tonight. They were at the school to complete registration for the 2014/2015 term and to learn more about the school program, culture, and teaching methods.  The active interest shown by the students and families promises a terrific new year ahead. There are a very limited number of new student slots available and the second phase for applications is available through July 31st....

The Board of Trustees of The Community School met last night to review the evaluations of the 2013/2014 school year. These included evaluations of the school by students, sponsors, and staff volunteers as well as student self-evaluations.  This activity has been an important part of the planning process in the school for over 3 decades. It is another way that the students, families and staff have significant input into the operation of the school.  The Board includes 2 former students and 3 former sponsors and has a combined history with the school of over 174 years! The Trustees also adopted a budget for next year, approved the school calendar and reworked the sponsor program for the school. We're all looking forward to an even better new school year....

Just one year ago the students took a trip of a lifetime to the Southwest.  It was an amazing journey, beginning with the whole community effort to raise money to send the students to the welcoming into their homes and communities of our many friends in that part of the country.  It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  You can read about the journey in the booklet that was produced after we came back.
