All of the students expressed their appreciation to Dr. George Tilson as he wrapped up his last class of the year as leader of the Year 1 Job Readiness Seminar. George has served as adjunct faculty at a number of colleges and universities including George Washington University. Today's seminar focused on entrepreneurship as he divided the class into 3 groups to each design a free standing business. The students had a terrific time presenting their "businesses" to the school.  Thank you George!...

Students in Year 2, including Dyrrell Moon, gained valuable life skills today as part of their Job Readiness Seminar.  Today's class focused on "the job interview" and students role played interviews with Mitchell Brown, TCS Advisory Board member and Chief Operating officer of Compco Digital.  Class leader Peggy Lashbrook gave the students tips as well as led a critique session after each interview.  This skill will be put to use by many students over the next several weeks as they apply for summer jobs, camps, and internships....

With Year 1 class and shadow students watching on, Year 2 class was dropping eggs off the greenhouse deck.  This was part of an experiment conducted by JHU-CSI as part of their weekly lab series. The students each designed containers with straw and masking tape to absorb the energy of impact and protect the egg.  Students Sadie Greenwood, Janiah Tillery, Kelsey Larrimore, Natasha Martin, Chris White and Daj'a White each were successful with their designs.  Everyone had a lot of fun!...

Special thanks to writer and photographer Jim Burger for writing a story about The Community School that was published in the B today. Jim spent several months at the school and shared a lot of time with the students. He talked to dozens of people from students and alumni to families and volunteers in an effort to truly capture what goes on at the school and what it means to those who are a part of this effort. With the wrap up of the 2nd Trimester, a meeting was held for all Year 1 & Year 2 students and sponsors at the school. There was a special presentation from art teacher Miko Veldkamp with a showing of art work produced by the class.  Students shared insights into their work with Donald Lacy explaining his work reflected an "explosion of happiness." This was followed by a talk on highlights of the trimester before each class broke into separate sessions.  Teachers Genira Nelson-Lewis and Tom Culotta led discussions with students and sponsors about progress and issues. Substantive concerns about student habits and stress were discussed as well as the pace needed for graduation in three years.  The meeting ended with report card distribution.  The next sponsor meeting will take place on June 2nd....

A Sponsor Meeting will be held at the school for both Year 1 and Year 2 students on Thursday, March 10th from 5:30 P.M.-6:30 P.M..  The meeting marks the end of the 2nd Trimester and report cards will be distributed....

Wounds across the classroom were expertly bandaged with care yesterday as the students participated in a special full day seminar.  Mark Henckel , safety manager at Iacoboni Site Specialists, taught and certified all of the students in CPR and First Aid.  The students were educated in all the aspects of emergency first aid and treatment as well as learning and practicing CPR on manikins deigned for this purpose.  Special thanks to Advisory Board member Tom Iacoboni for making this possible....

Gabby was part of a team at Johns Hopkins University that developed a new protective suit for health workers that are exposed to ebola patients. Gabby is a senior and is a part of the JHU-CSI (Community School Initiative) team that develops and conducts twice weekly labs for our students.  Congratulations Gabby!...
