September 2016

The first Sponsor Meeting of the year will take place on Thursday, September 15th from 5:30 to 7:30.  All students and sponsors are invited and expected to attend....

It was terrific to welcome everyone to the first day of the new term.  There are new faces in the class with Brooke, Garrett, Kirsten, Olivia, Sara, Shane, and Spencer joining the school. We're proud to have Sadie, Vernon, Dyrrell, Janiah, Chris, Daj'a, Donald, Jordan, Marcus, Caleb, India, and Donavin back at the school again. The students also met a new teacher at the school, Noah Saganski.  We are all looking forward to a great year!...

Here it is for all to see - the building work is done!  The entire outside of the school buildings has been redone and a new awning went up to cap this project off.  There are a number of other changes too with the addition of a third classroom, modifications in the student kitchen, shelving on the greenhouse deck, and a variety of other projects completed this summer.  This was funded entirely through contributions made to the school in this past year. We are very thankful for the support of so many people as we continue to provide the best learning environment for our students that we are able....

The little red school house is being transformed! We've had a problem for years with the brick on the exterior of the building wearing away and moisture wicking into the building, potentially causing a health hazard.  After searching for an affordable and lasting solution, we settled on a product called EIFS, a stucco like product. The new surface will not only solve this problem for many years to come, but also improve our energy efficiency and give us a new look. We are thankful for the effort of all of those working to make this happen especially Ed Gavin and the crew at CSC Construction along with the craftsman at Carter Contracting. Though the building will have a new look, it's the same great program.  Just like we ask of our students, we do the best with what we have and work to improve ourselves to the best of our ability each day....

After entering a writing piece developed in Mr. Don's writing class at The Community School, student Sadie Greenwood was a finalist in a writing contest held as part of the 2016 Urban Squash Individual Nationals. Sadie participated through SquashWise, a local youth program that has worked with her for several years.  This summer Sadie is participating in a five-week research course at the University of Baltimore that will examine "Issues of Inequality in Housing in Baltimore." We are very proud of Sadie's hard work and talent!...

There will be a special play performed today at the Single Carrot Theatre that will include TCS student Janiah Tillery.  Janiah has been part of a 2 week ensemble class at SCT along with a group of high school students from the Baltimore area.  We are especially grateful to Genevieve de Mahy and the folks at Single Carrot for providing scholarships once again this year to enable our students to participate. We're proud of you Janiah!...

Awarded a coveted spot at the Telluride Sophomore Seminar, student Dyrrell Moon is in Bloomington, Indiana for the next six weeks. This seminar is in its twenty-fourth year and this summer will focus on "The Black Struggle for Freedom: An Interdisciplinary Perspective." Dyrrell is getting a college experience staying in the dorms and studying at Indiana University.  He is enjoying living and working with a diverse group of students from across the country as they participate in lectures, discussions, research and debates. It is a real honor and once-in-a-lifetime experience for Dyrrell. We are all very proud of him!...

What a great way to end the year!  Students, staff volunteers, and Board members were hosted by Advisory Board member Tom & Jacque Iacoboni for a Pool Party today.  Plenty of food, games and fun were to be had as we celebrated our last time with everyone together for the 2015/2016 school term. The event that started mid afternoon went well into the evening wrapping up with a spirited game of bocce ball.  It was the first time that most of the students had ever heard of this traditional Italian game. Exhausted at the end of a wonderful day, everyone went their separate ways with a lasting memory of this remarkable year....

[embed]https://youtu.be/hoT5Yp0N6t8[/embed] The final edition of TCS Student News for the 2015-2016 term was researched, produced, written, and anchored by students India Smith, Daj'a White, and Kelsey Larrimore.  It starts with a look at Memorial Day and then recaps some highlights of the year. We hope you enjoy it and will stay tuned for the return of TCS Student News in September. Have a good summer everyone!...

The last Sponsor Meeting of the year will take place on Thursday, June 2nd at 5:30 P.M. for both Year 1 and Year 2 students and sponsors.  There will be an evaluation of the 15/16 term, information on the new term, and report cards will be distributed....
