The students had the amazing opportunity to hear music rooted in East Africa at the Creative Alliance in Highlandtown today. The leader of the band, Alsarah, was born in Khartoum, Sudan and grew up in Yemen and then settled in Brooklyn, New York. Her music reflects those deep roots and diverse experiences. Student Aidan McIntosh described the music as “powerful” and other students commented on the complex rhythms and getting lost in the music. After the performance, the students had a chance to talk with Alsarah and the members of the band that included Rami Al Aasser, Mawuena Kodjovi, Nahid, and Brandon Terzic.
