Recent TCS graduate Jordan Leon began his first semester at Community College of Baltimore County today. Jordan had his full lineup of classes with Fundamentals of Communication, Intro Spanish, Health and Wellness, and English. As a testament to the ongoing support provided by TCS, Jordan started his day with a phone call to Mr. Tom. "I was nervous going in, but it was good. I have a lot of work coming up," Jordan said. The class he is most looking forward to is Health and Wellness. We are confident that Jordan has the tools for success! ...

We love seeing our students give back to the community! Rising Junior Salma Ruiz-Cruz has been busy this summer in the Baltimore YouthWorks program. Salma spent the last month teaching English to Spanish-speakers ages 6-12. She tutored the children with worksheets on topics such as grammar, vocabulary and spelling. Salma says that her favorite part of the experience was watching as the kids became more comfortable with her over the month, and getting to grow with them at the same time. A highlight for her was working on her own Spanish skills as she helped translate for the parents. Salma is interested in teaching, and she says that this experience helped give her insight on what age she likes to teach most.  We are very proud of Salma for the wonderful job she has done this summer! ...

The first class you take in college can be exciting, nerve-wracking, intimidating, or any combination of emotions. For most new college students, the step into your first class can feel all the more daunting because you are newly removed from the support system you have been accustomed to in high school. Thankfully for our TCS seniors, this doesn’t have to be their reality. To ensure a smooth transition process, we send our seniors to the Community College of Baltimore County for an “intro to college” course that will help ease their transition to the new learning environment that awaits post-high school. We are very happy to announce that our class of 2019 seniors, Donald Lacy and Jordan Leon, have successfully completed their first college course. We sat down together to discuss their experience. According to Jordan, the goal of the course was to teach ways to be successful in college, and specifically CCBC. Donald added that the course covered everything from financial aid, time management, and note taking to how to use Blackboard, an online teaching tool where they can find their assignments. For Donald, the most useful part of the class was learning to use Blackboard, so that he may be able to jump right in next year. Jordan appreciated the lessons on time management. Looking ahead to the future, both Donald and Jordan have a few ideas of in what direction they would like to go. Donald would like to complete his general education classes at CCBC while also doing a volunteer firefighter program....

Representation matters. That’s exactly why Dyrrell Moon, TCS class of ‘17, presented today on his study abroad experience. As a student of Howard University, Dyrrell believes that once one sees someone from their kind of experience doing something like traveling, they can believe that it can happen for them, too. Dyrrell is an International Affairs major and spent his time abroad working with the European Union. He presented a slideshow of the places he studied and what he learned about European trade and governance. The students asked questions about Brexit, which Dyrrell was able to learn about first-hand, and what it’s like traveling in foreign countries. It’s wonderful for the students to be able to hear about the success of a recent graduate!...

Congratulations to Janiah Tillery for making the dean’s list this year at Roanoke College! Janiah graduated from TCS in 2017 with a full-ride scholarship to Roanoke, where she studies history. Janiah likes to visit us here at TCS when she’s not in college, and we’ve enjoyed seeing her this past week now that the semester is over. We’re proud of you, Janiah! ...

It is always a great treat to welcome TCS graduates back to talk about their successes. This Friday, firefighters Jason Hammonds and CJ Sosa told the story of their lives at school, their journey to becoming firefighters, and what life is like on the job. “What made it even more special was that they were TCS graduates… They talked about… the process of becoming a firefighter, their best and worst calls they received, and more topics. Just hearing what you do as an EMT firefighter makes me want to choose that as one of my career options” said Sean, who will be considering those career options as a senior next year. Salma, a sophomore, said that she enjoys that TCS graduates come back and visit, even if they left years ago. She says, “I hope I can continue my education here, graduate, and then come back like they did and tell my story. Not just my parents would be proud, but also Mr. Tom. I could be someone to other students and my brother could look up to."  Thanks for being an inspiration, Jason and CJ!...

Hear what the students had to say about the “Conversation With” with former TCS student Detective Jake Nickels: “I loved today’s conversation with Detective Jake Nickles. His life was/is definitely interesting, and we learned so much. He told us a lot of his parts of stories in the PD and he told us his opinion about what he thinks about police brutality and corruption. I was actually surprised when he told us that he usually doesn’t carry a weapon. I really hope we can see him again for another conversation with because we loved him.” -Sean “I like how even though he had bad experience with the police, he still decided to become one because he wanted to make a difference. He didn’t want to be like them, he wanted his community to feel safe and not feel threatened because of what you hear on the news. How he approaches situations without a weapon and just talks to them is very interesting and we need more policemen like him.” -Salma...

TCS student Aidan McIntosh won 1st place in the Advanced Division at the Maryland Chess Tournament held at Poly on Saturday, February 17th. This win places him at a national rating of 1268 junior varsity. Aidan is preparing for the Nationals in Atlanta on April 6-8.  He has attended previous Nationals in Ohio, Tennessee, and Indiana. We are all proud of you, Aidan!...

We are proud to announce that graduating student Dyrrell Moon has been accepted to attend Howard University!  This has been a dream for Dyrrell in his quest to prepare for a career to advance social justice in the  international arena.  Dyrrell is on the accelerated high school track at The Community School and will graduate before his 17th birthday.  This past summer Dyrrell participated in a 6 week seminar at Indiana University sponsored by the Telluride Association. He is an Honor Student, maintains a weekend job, and has given a significant amount of time to volunteerism including at Single Carrot Theatre. Dyrrell shares this accomplishment with his mother, Crystal Phillips, and his sponsor McLean Beto. We are deeply proud of Dyrrell's continued accomplishments....

Honor student Janiah Tillery has been awarded a full scholarship to Roanoke College!  Janiah is enrolled as a pre-med major for the fall term at this 171 year old private college in Salem, Virginia.  This is a major step in her dream of becoming a medical doctor. Janiah is  a hardworking, well-rounded student. In addition to being an honor student, she also has a Saturday job, is a peer educator at Planned Parenthood, attends the Mission Fit gym, and participates in weightlifting competitions. Her mother, Donnita McGowan, and sponsor, Lisa Knickmeyer, share in this great success.  Congratulations Janiah!...
