We had a very meaningful conversation with Carlos Payes, owner of Remington's Café Los Sueños. Carlos talked about growing up in the mountains of El Salvador and the challenges of living in a meager shack and working in the coffee plantations starting at the age of 7. He spoke about the challenges trying to get an education and dealing with the violent gangs and his difficult trip to the U.S. Carlos also shared his drive to make a better life and his determination to build and own his coffee roasting business and cafe. He is another example of the contributions that immigrants make and have always made to this community and our country. We are fortunate to have him as a part of our community and for his sharing of his story. Thank you Carlos!...

Have you ever had to unclog a toilet or replace the flapper in the back? Yesterday, the folks at Done Construction conducted their monthly home repair seminar on all about toilets. The students learned how a toilet works, areas where there are common leaks, how to reseat a toilet and several ways to deal with a clogged toilet. Here at The Community School we believe that high school students should get a broad range of skills in addition to a rigorous academic program. We were honored to attend the Annual Charitable Giving event of the Associated Italian-American Charities last night. The Community School has been supported by AIAC for 20 years at the initial invitation of Tom & Jacque Iacoboni who have continued to support the school every year since. We are grateful to them along with Tony Culotta, Felix Dialoiso, Ray Marocco Jr., Mike Meola, Mike Gallo and Mike Shaw, each of whom sponsored the school through AIAC this year. AIAC was founded in the Italian-American community after World War II to support orphans from the war in Italy. It has grown over the years to support hundreds of nonprofit organizations with most in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Not only do its members raise all of the money given out each year through a variety of events, but many are personally involved with the organizations they sponsor. Ethan Christou and Jayla Nickens-Gill did a great job speaking for the students and school at the event and expressed our appreciation for the invitation to the dinner and for the many years of support. The students were tasked to enter one of three doors, marked YESTERDAY, TODAY, or TOMORROW. YESTERDAY would allow them to experience any historical event, but not change the outcome. TODAY would place them in the middle of any current event. And TOMORROW would take them forward 12 years to celebrate what would then be Mr. Tom’s 80th Birthday. JAYLA feels the pain of slavery and meets a woman called Minty. A Woman Called Minty I open the door to Yesterday. I walk through and it feels like I’m falling until, suddenly, I slam into the ground. I look around and see nothing but African Americans being whipped, people crying out, others picking cotton. Suddenly, a huge force connects with my face. I cry out in pain only to be hit again. The brutal force inflicted on me left me extremely confused. After a while, the hits stopped, and the white man walked off. My body ached. The amount of pain was enough to make someone want to end their life. “Get up” a woman said. “Get to work before he brings more.” The woman walked off and went back to doing the tasks given to her. I managed to sum up enough energy to get close to her. I started picking cotton as well, my body still burning from the punishment before. “Where am I?” I asked “Dorchester County” the woman said “W-What’s your name?” I asked the woman “Minty” she said. “Stop talking before you get us both whipped or worse...

DANNY takes us into the bizarre 9th Century papal synod of a cadaver. The Cadaver Synod I’m walking down a long, paved road in the countryside, where each house and patch of land is so very separate from another. I go off to a trail, where the trees are marked with crimson stripes of paint, and I arrive at a cave with distinct graffiti on it. I walk into the cave, compelled by boredom. Surrounded by darkness, I use my phone as a flashlight. After a certain point of depth into this cave, I see architecture and artifacts of which I’ve never seen before. I find artifacts of great technology, almost as If crafted by gods. Things that I cannot begin to comprehend are scattered throughout. I arrive at a room with three doors, all of which have symbols over top of them. Not knowing what each of these doors represent, I reluctantly search the cave for some sort of hint or translation for the symbols. I find 3 tablets, one of which is broken, but the two are in a language I’ve never seen before. From then I connect the dots that this language is very similar to Cuneiform, and I spend several...

The students learned all about the work of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police. These are the folks who you see at the airport, tunnels port and more. Sergeant Jermaine Montgomery, Senior Officer Ted Jeremenko and Officer Ayanna Turner shared about their lives and careers. The students were especially interested in experiences they have had on the job, their views on policing and how their work affected their personal lives. The students had the honor of having Kelly Graham and Kathi Riley attend their American Sign Language classes with Peggy Lashbrook yesterday. Kelly, an educator who happens to be deaf, expanded the students experience and knowledge with ASL while Kathi both shared her knowledge and provided translation when needed. Both of these educators worked with both Peggy's ASL I and ASL II classes. Thank you for making the trip down from Delaware to provide these valuable lessons!...
