The students had a special seminar course in American Sign Language taught by Peggy Lashbrook. Peggy started the course with an explanation of how she came to learn sign language and her lifetime of work in the deaf community. The students concentrated on learning the alphabet and 100 common words. All of the students enjoyed the class. The school is considering American Sign Language to be on the course list next year....

The students attended a unique play at Single Carrot Theatre called The Death of Walt Disney. Performed by Paul Diem, Mohammad , Eric Poch, and Meghan Stanton, the play explored the dark side of the late creator of the Disney empire. Student Claude Nicholson said, "I liked it because it showed a deeper view of how business can truly change a man." TCS student Aidan McIntosh won 1st place in the Advanced Division at the Maryland Chess Tournament held at Poly on Saturday, February 17th. This win places him at a national rating of 1268 junior varsity. Aidan is preparing for the Nationals in Atlanta on April 6-8. He has attended previous Nationals in Ohio, Tennessee, and Indiana. The students had the amazing opportunity to hear music rooted in East Africa at the Creative Alliance in Highlandtown today. The leader of the band, Alsarah, was born in Khartoum, Sudan and grew up in Yemen and then settled in Brooklyn, New York. Her music reflects those deep roots and diverse experiences. Student Aidan McIntosh described the music as "powerful" and other students commented on the complex rhythms and getting lost in the music. After the performance, the students had a chance to talk with Alsarah and the members of the band that included Rami Al Aasser, Mawuena Kodjovi, Nahid, and Brandon Terzic. Much thanks to Josh Kohn and the Creative Alliance for making this possible and to Fleesie Hubbard for always scouting new opportunities for exposure for the students. Prepare yourself for a uniquely good time at the “Hunting to Help” Circle of Love-Maryland Scavenger Hunt Event to benefit The Community School. It will take place on Saturday, March 10th starting at 11am at the school. There will be awards, raffles, door prizes and refreshments from 4pm to 6pm. A car won’t be necessary because there will be both walking and driving hunts.
