Students were able to get a first hand look at 2 new development projects going up in Remington.  Thibault Manekin, partner in Seawall Development,  extended an invitation to the school to get a personal tour of the Remington Row and R House projects. In addition to touring and learning about an active construction site, the students heard about the development process, final plans, and philosophy behind the projects. After the tour, the students wrote about the experience. Everyone was excited at the chance for this opportunity.  However, there were many sobering comments like this one from student and lifelong Remington resident Kelsey Larrimore who wrote, "It is so amazing to see the process of building something and watching it evolve. I liked the way the building was set up. It has a lot of great things to offer. I wish that the lower classes had the opportunity for things like this. We get pushed to the side and nothing that is being built will impact us. We won’t even get the chance to experience all the great things that’s happening around us." We appreciated the kindness during the tour shown by Thibault and the folks at Seawall....

Each day after school you can find many of the students from TCS at the Mission Fit gym working out. This Remington program provides a great opportunity for them to improve their physical strength and stamina after a long day in class.  Recently WJZ featured Mission Fit in a story that included an interview with TCS student Janiah Tillery.  Students Marcus McKeever, Donald Lacy, and Donavin Hooper can also be seen working out in the background. Special thanks to Mission Fit founder Wendy Wolock for opening up this opportunity for our students. To watch the story follow this link: WJZ Story on Mission Fit...

Though usually wearing his hat as the longtime Creative Writing Seminar teacher at the school, Don Riesett filled in as the gym teacher today.  The school's physical education teacher, Sasha Draper, is on maternity leave and our terrific substitute, Eduardo Viana, was unable to teach today so Mr. Don stepped up to the plate. All of the students really enjoyed the class. Student Sadie Greenwood stated, "We never sweated so much in gym before!" Thanks, Mr. Don!!...

Longtime neighbor of the school Mohammad Farouk Islam spoke to the Year 2 class today about the religion of Islam.  He shared some stories about growing up in Bangladesh and working in Saudi Arabia before becoming a permanent resident of the United States many years ago.  Mohammad talked about the pillars of Islam and explained his view that it is a religion of peace and a guide to living, and not a belief to be forced on everyone.  When asked about ISIS, Mohammad said that groups such as that distort Islam and are not what he considers true followers.  The students were very interested in his presentation and hope to have him back to continue the conversation...

All of the students expressed their appreciation to Dr. George Tilson as he wrapped up his last class of the year as leader of the Year 1 Job Readiness Seminar. George has served as adjunct faculty at a number of colleges and universities including George Washington University. Today's seminar focused on entrepreneurship as he divided the class into 3 groups to each design a free standing business. The students had a terrific time presenting their "businesses" to the school.  Thank you George!...

Students in Year 2, including Dyrrell Moon, gained valuable life skills today as part of their Job Readiness Seminar.  Today's class focused on "the job interview" and students role played interviews with Mitchell Brown, TCS Advisory Board member and Chief Operating officer of Compco Digital.  Class leader Peggy Lashbrook gave the students tips as well as led a critique session after each interview.  This skill will be put to use by many students over the next several weeks as they apply for summer jobs, camps, and internships....

With Year 1 class and shadow students watching on, Year 2 class was dropping eggs off the greenhouse deck.  This was part of an experiment conducted by JHU-CSI as part of their weekly lab series. The students each designed containers with straw and masking tape to absorb the energy of impact and protect the egg.  Students Sadie Greenwood, Janiah Tillery, Kelsey Larrimore, Natasha Martin, Chris White and Daj'a White each were successful with their designs.  Everyone had a lot of fun!...
