TCS Student Natasha Martin was on WYPR radio as part of her work with Wide Angle Youth Media. Natasha has been working on a project that linked her with students in Bulgaria. She wrote and read a piece composed from her knowledge comparing youth and education issues in Baltimore with those of her her new friends across the Atlantic. The students have been preparing for the spring planting season by sewing liners for old milk crates that will become planters. Under the guidance of our greenhouse educator Molly McCullagh, the students learned how to sew landscape fabric to give new life to these old crates and expand our growing potential. The class will soon start spring planting both to produce food for the school and to sell plants to raise money to keep the project going and encourage neighbors and friends to grow their own food.
News anchors Dyrrell Moon and Strom Isbert
The school has initiated a new program called “15 Minutes”. This is an opportunity for students to make a 15 minute presentation about a topic that interests them or about someone/something that is important to them. Today Dyrrell Moon, looking sharp in his science lab coat, presented about noted astrophysicist Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson. Dyrrell is interested in pursuing this career and explained to the class an outline of what is involved. He performed an experiment and also showed a brief video on the origins of the universe. It was a terrific presentation and great start to this new program.
Co-Anchors Kelsey Larrimore and Daj’a White recorded the 2nd news broadcast of the new weekly feature, TCS Student news. They covered stories that included the recent murder of student protestors in Mexico and an update on the kidnapping of the schoolgirls by Boko Haram. They even gave a weekend weather forecast and a health report.
Tonight, the first two student-sponsor meetings of the new year were held. Each of these new students and their families displayed such eagerness and enthusiasm for their future at The Community School. It is a reminder of the great potential that exists in our youth, their families, and our community. We are not a big school, but I wouldn’t trade this new group of students for any others. It’s going to be a terrific year!
