The class attended a showing of the movie Selma today.  It was a moving experience and helped to make this part of American history come alive for the students.  Tonight, they are writing about the experience and doing research including reading the front pages from the New York Times from the days of the original marches back in 1965.  Much thanks to the Charles Theatre for providing the tickets and to Vernon Laumann and Kim Poe who provided the rides.

Dr RonAs part of the students’ study of world geography, the class was honored to have Dr. Ron Walcher as a guest speaker today.  Dr. Ron has made nine trips to Kyrgyzstan since 1995 providing medical services in remote villages. The students are currently studying The Caucasus and Central Asia, both examining the countries there and the impact of this region on world events. Dr. Ron shared his personal stories and illustrated his words with many photographs from his travels as well as cultural items from his travels. The students enjoyed this visit and were impressed with both his personal knowledge and Dr. Ron’s example of helping others.

Students at Baltimore City CouncilWhat an experience students from The Community School had today!  The class spent the morning at Baltimore City Hall starting off with a tour, meeting the Mayor, President of the City Council, City Comptroller, Finance Director and a host of other elected and government officials. During a Board of Estimates meeting, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake took time from the agenda to speak about the long history of The Community School and congratulating the students on their achievements.

After a tour with the City Hall curator, the students went to work in City Council Chambers where City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke conducted the last session in her Baltimore seminar continuing the class that the students have had with her for the past several weeks. The students had two mock sessions where they exchanged roles as city council members and citizens presenting testimony. Special thanks to Council President Jack Young for taking the time to talk with the students and for making an on-the-spot major contribution to the school. We are beyond grateful to have Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke as a part of the school for so many years and for setting up this unique and amazing experience.

IMG_5880 - Version 2TCS Student Natasha Martin was on WYPR radio as part of her work with Wide Angle Youth Media. Natasha has been working on a project that linked her with students in Bulgaria.  She wrote and read a piece composed from her knowledge comparing youth and education issues in Baltimore with those of her her new friends across the Atlantic.  You can listen to her broadcast by clicking the play button below. We are very proud of her!

Sewing for SpringThe students have been preparing for the spring planting season by sewing liners for old milk crates that will become planters.  Under the guidance of our greenhouse educator Molly McCullagh, the students learned how to sew landscape fabric to give new life to these old crates and expand our growing potential. The class will soon start spring planting both to produce food for the school and to sell plants to raise money to keep the project going and encourage neighbors and friends to grow their own food.
