Conversation with U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski

We had the amazing honor of having a Conversation with former U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski today. She talked about her childhood growing up in Highlandtown and her lifetime of service to the people of Baltimore and beyond as a member of the City Council, U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Barbara Mikulski was the first women in Maryland to be elected to the U.S. Senate where she served for 30 years.

The students asked questions about the issues that they are concerned with like women’s rights and violence, but also about her growing up and early experiences. Senator Mikulski was generous with her time and spoke candidly with the students. She commented on how well informed the students are and how much she enjoyed the conversation as well.

Our deepest thanks to Senator Mikulski for her years of service and her kindness to us. And special thanks to former Baltimore City Council President Mary Pat Clarke for helping to arrange this visit and for joining us for the conversation.

Conversation with Carlos Payes

We had a very meaningful conversation with Carlos Payes, owner of Remington’s Café Los Sueños. Carlos talked about growing up in the mountains of El Salvador and the challenges of living in a meager shack and working in the coffee plantations starting at the age of 7. He spoke about the challenges trying to get an education and dealing with the violent gangs and his difficult trip to the U.S.

Carlos also shared his drive to make a better life and his determination to build and own his coffee roasting business and cafe. He is another example of the contributions that immigrants make and have always made to this community and our country. We are fortunate to have him as a part of our community and for his sharing of his story. Thank you Carlos!

Students Learn Home Repair Skills

Have you ever had to unclog a toilet or replace the flapper in the back? Yesterday, the folks at Done Construction conducted their monthly home repair seminar on all about toilets. The students learned how a toilet works, areas where there are common leaks, how to reseat a toilet and several ways to deal with a clogged toilet.

Here at The Community School we believe that high school students should get a broad range of skills in addition to a rigorous academic program. Thank you to Done Construction for adding to our students’ education!
