Today we commemorated International Holocaust Remembrance Day by having a Conversation with Larry Gross.  Larry shared the story of how his mom and family were rounded up and taken to Auschwitz. As they disembarked from the railcar, they were met with the evil presence of Dr. Mengele, called the angel of death, who made immediate decisions of who would be sent to work or death. Larry’s mom survived the camp escaping near the end of the war, but even more horrific and miraculous, she survived a malfunction of the gas chamber itself. Larry also shared about his journey to retrace his mom’s journey from her childhood home to Auschwitz itself.  This was a most solemn conversation both as we sought to feel and understand the past and to heighten our awareness of how genocide and fascism are an ever-present threat.  We embrace the important refrain Never Again.

Our deepest appreciation to Larry for sharing this difficult but critically important story.

This week’s broadcast by Madison Hansel and Karla Rivas covers the latest news from the unrest in Peru. TCS News include a special “Conversation with…” author and youth advocate Bridgette Pearce, the last of the Young Playwrights Seminars from Joe Carlson and Center Stage, a special college announcement and much more.

Author and youth advocate Bridgette Pearce was our guest today in the “Conversation with…” series. She shared her experiences growing up surrounded by abuse and addiction, and her remarkable story of determination to escape those circumstances and build a fulfilling life of family, career and service to others. Bridgette is part of CASA of Baltimore County where she is President of the Board of Directors and a volunteer youth advocate.
We met Ms. Pearce at the Associated Italian-American Charities Giving Night. She is the author of the Memoir “Detached.” Her honest sharing about her early life had a real impact on the students. She generously gave each student a signed copy of her book and offered assistance if any would ever need her.
We are very thankful for her kindness, shared life lessons and example of strength in the face of adversity.

Jayla Nickens-Gill was accepted into Hood College in Frederick, her first choice, with a Leadership Award Scholarship! Ethan Christou was accepted into his first choice college, Loyola University, with both a Dean’s Scholarship and a Loyola Grant.

We are so very proud of Jayla and Ethan and applaud their accomplishments.

Check out this past week’s edition of TCS Student News with a lead story on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Struggle and the connection to issues today. Student anchors Rhys Guilfoyle and Ethan Jobita Jemadari explain how the school commemorated Dr. King’s birthday.  Other stories include the latest Theatre Seminar with The Lyric, a “Conversation with…” Stevanie Williams and Parrish Allison of Wombwork Productions  and even more.

We had the pleasure of hosting Stevanie Williams and Parrish Allison for our “Conversation with…” this week. Stevanie is the playwright of “The Channelling of Ms. Sybby Grant” a play we experienced at The Lyric in November. It is about the lives of Ms. Grant and others enslaved in the mansion that is now The Walter’s Art Gallery. Stevanie and Parris were both actors in this important and meaningful play as part of a Baltimore group called Wombwork Productions.

Stevanie and Parris shared their stories growing up in Baltimore and talked about their varied creative careers in music, plays, movies as well as their commitment to youth and community work. The discussion was lively and warm.

Thank you for your generous sharing of time and stories.
