The students had a unique experience today with an hour and a half ZOOM with a group of students in Dublin, Ireland. This is part of an international project called CO-VISION that our students have been involved in for the past several months. This project was created to give youth a voice in both analyzing the impact of the COVID pandemic on young people and promoting changes should remote learning be necessary again. CO-VISION Ireland has partner projects in Australia, Taiwan, Mexico and ours in the U.S.

Our project is led and staffed by Denise Gantt, Education Director at the Lyric, and Maya James. TCS students have been focusing on changes that need to be made for young people to THRIVE in Baltimore.  Next week, the students will be presenting their ideas to local elected officials.  Stay tuned to hear their ideas.

Multi-talented musician Wendel Patrick came to the school today as our Conversation with…” guest. Wendel started his musical career as a concert pianist and has played with orchestras around the world. He continued to expand his direction into other genres of music including most notably hip hop and in both photography and videography. Wendel teaches at the Peabody Institute and was recently a teaching fellow at Harvard.
Wendel shared stories about his life but also his perspective on talent and skill, fulfillment and achievement. the students especially liked hearing his music and learning how it is made as well as sharing a segment of the Out of the Blocks radio program that he did with Aaron Henkin.
It was a real pleasure having Wendel back with us again. thank you Wendel!

Author D. Watkins came back to the school today for a really great “Conversation with…” The students just finished reading his latest book Black Boy Smile, a memoir about growing up in Baltimore.. Much of the conversation revolved around the book and the issues raised in it though D. also talked bout his writing process and other projects n the works. Mr. Watkins last visited the school in 2016 to discuss his just released work entitled The Beast Side.

We really appreciated his openness about his journey of self discovery while dealing with the intensity of life around him. Thank you Mr. Watkins!

William Vanzella, international soccer player and Baltimore Blast goalie, returned to the school on Friday. Once again, he shared stories about his life growing up in Brazil and his career that included playing on the Italian national team, in Japan and then here in Baltimore.
Mr. Vanzella captivated the students’ interest as he shared the lessons of his life and his strong values and habits. He is an inspiration, and we were deeply honored to have him here. The impact of his powerful story will be lasting. We deeply appreciate his generous sharing of time with us.
Special thanks to Don and Sande Riesett for inviting Mr. Vanzella on behalf of the school.
