We welcome Johns Hopkins University students John Ellis and Angela Gutierrez to the staff of TCS during the 23/24 school year. Both are working at our school as work study interns through the kindness of the Center for Social Concern (CSC) at JHU. We have had a relationship with CSC since its inception and even before that with the Office of Hopkins Chaplain Chester Wickwire. Both John and Angie are Juniors at Hopkins and though Angie is new to TCS, John worked here last year. Angie is working in the classroom assisting with program administration and John is primarily working on organizing and preserving the school archives. Welcome Aboard John and Angie and thank you to the Center for Social Concern. ...

Denise Kumani Gantt, Director of Education and Resident Artist at The Lyric, brings her talents into TCS again this year with a new class.  Ms. Denise is focusing on the play - understanding this art form, its structure and elements.  This includes reading plays, watching performances and meeting with playwrights. The students are also doing journaling that will become the basis for a performance that they will do at the End of Year Ceremony. Thank you Ms. Denise!...

The students are excited to have Ms. Leandra's weekly Art Class start up again for the new year. Leandra brings her talent, background as a commercial artist and 25 years of teaching experience at Loyola Blakefield into the classroom. Last year the students produced some remarkable work including their beautiful Impressionist paintings that were featured at the End of Year Ceremony. We are eager to witness the skills she develops in the students this year and the creativity she brings forward. Thank you Ms. Leandra!...

Ed & Mike Gavin have been working for weeks to replace the decking and railing on the back deck. The project included moving the greenhouse and building a new potting table. It looks beautiful and is much more functional. Today, Hector and Karla volunteered their time to get the greenhouse set up and to plant the first set of crops. They planted food items that the students will eat at the school including broccoli, carrots and peppers and spices that we will sell to raise money for the project including basil, parsley, dill and cilantro. Stay tuned for way more on this project!!...

Students, Sponsors and family members gathered at the school for the first sponsor meeting of the new school year. This marked the first meeting where simultaneous Spanish/English translation was used through the very capable effort of student Karla Rivas. Mr. Tom welcomed everyone, reinforced the mission of the school and talked about the importance of attending class every day including how to minimize missing classes when scheduling appointments. To update everyone, each student did a presentation on courses, seminars and activities that had taken place in the school so far this year. Gratitude was given to all who have donated lunches and pantry items. Parent Carla Monge shared her delicious homemade fresh fruit juice with all at the end of the meeting. It was an engaging meeting and enthusiastic support was shown for the students and school. ...

Thank you Center Stage for inviting the students of The Community School to attend the play "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill!" It was a captivating play about Billie Holiday, the legendary Baltimore born and raised jazz singer whose powerful lyrics and voice influenced generations. In a very creative and compelling way, the play had Lady Day weaving her life story in between singing her songs at a final performance in Philadelphia. The play not only dealt with her personal struggles with abuse, domestic violence and racism but also put it in the context of what was going on in society as a whole. For the students, it brought home the message of how many of these issues they relate to in their lives today. A special thanks to Janal Daniel, the Director of Learning and Social Accountability for seating us inside the play at the cabaret tables. it made the experience even more real. ...
