[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]Exposing the students to opportunities in the building trades is a priority for The Community School. It is as important as preparing the students for postsecondary academic education and entering into the professions. We want our students to have opportunities that will fulfill them and enable them to have a decent life. Today we were joined by Chris Laird, a journeyman electrician in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 24. Chris talked about his work and career trajectory, but focused on the opportunities available as an electrician. Two of our seniors toured the trade program at CCBC in Catonsville on Monday to look at their programs. In January, we had a speaker from the trade school operated by the Associated Builders and Contractors. We were happy to see our former art teacher, Leandra Laird, who accompanied her son for his presentation. Thank you Chris for sharing this important information and your experiences with the students.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]Assistant Dean Michelle White and Doctor Brian Metcalfe of the Dual Enrollment office at Baltimore City Community College came to have a conversation with the students about how their college course at TCS is going.  This action is a great display of the commitment that Michelle and Brian  have to the students they serve.  They are constantly working and advocating to improve the services that BCCC delivers. The students offered very detailed and analytical feedback so a great discussion ensued. We are very fortunate to have a meaningful partnership with the Dual Enrollment office at Baltimore City Community College. Thank you Michelle & Brian.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]TCS students were honored to attend the play Trinity at Center Stage.  Written by Emmy award winning writer Lena Waithe, this story of the complexity of love captivated the imagination with its uniquely creative staging. Following the play, for the whole audience, TCS junior Mohamed Cisse moderated a talk back with Lena Waithe and the other two actors - Courtney Sauls and Fedna Jacquet. The play was universally appreciated by all of the students who each took away insights into the relationships presented and how they inform our own lives. We deeply appreciate what Center Stage offers to the Baltimore community and their inclusion and kindness to our students.   [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]We were honored to have members of student Ethan Jobita Jemadari's family join us for his Conversation.  His Aunt Emma and cousin Bianca were visiting from London where they live and were joined by his Aunt Penina to share their experiences with the students.  Ethan's aunts grew up in Kenya and spoke about their journeys leaving home to find opportunity in other lands. Bianca, who was born in England, shared the differences in approaches to education between here and across the ocean. This was an inspiring and enlightening Conversation and made us even more proud to have Ethan and hiss family as part of our school community.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]All the world's a stage!  That was certainly true at The Lyric where students continued to build and showcase their skills in this monthly seminar. Students ran through a number of exercises before breaking into groups to develop performance skits. Not only are the students developing their theatre skills, but also building their creativity, confidence and bonds with their classmates. We deeply appreciate our relationship with The Lyric with special thanks to Education Director Denise Gantt and staff Ebony Evans, Mitch Harris and musician Antonio Eyez.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]Longtime supporter of the school, Matt Wyskiel, founder & president of Skill Capital Management, came into the school for aa Conversation. Matt talked about growing up in Baltimore and his education and career trajectory.  He also talked his commitment to supporting educational and mentoring opportunities for Baltimore youth including his support for The Community School. The students have a keen interest in finance from their Financial Literacy Seminars and had a lot of questions for Matt. They also talked about his belief and vision for Baltimore. We appreciated this opportunity to have Matt visit and talk with us as well as his support for our work.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]...

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]This edition of TCS Student News examines the effects of social media on teens and efforts to regulate this. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]Having a car is a goal of most teenagers.  This was the topic in this month's Financial Literacy Seminar brought to the school by Berman McAleer. Each student researched and picked a car and then learned about all of the costs associated with that decision - purchase, loan interest, maintenance and insurance. This was another valuable life skills lesson brought to us by BMc under the leadership of Kathleen Gower. This session Kathleen was assisted by fellow coworker and frequent TCS visitor, Adaiha Montgomery, teaching this class. We deeply appreciate our friends at Berman McAleer and the vital life lessons they add to our students' education at TCS.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]...
