Conversation with Chef Steven Albright

We were honored to have a “Conversation with…” Chef Steven Albright at the school today. He is the Executive Chef at the noted Washington D.C. restaurant Cuba Libre though we met him as the Culinary Director of the Franciscan Center. Chef Steve transformed their program feeding the hungry and homeless and created a 12 week culinary arts program preparing those who use their services and others in need for jobs and a career.

Chef Steve talked about his own transformation from being addicted and incarcerated into a life of purpose and service. He candidly shared the story of his ups and downs with the students and the lessons learned along the way. It was both moving and meaningful.

Not only did he fill our hearts and challenge our heads, but he filled our bellies as well! Chef Steve brought Cubano sandwiches, rice and beans, fried plantains and 3 kinds of deserts – tres leches, rice pudding and flan. All were made fresh and provided by Cuba Libre!

This is Chef Steve’s 2nd visit to the school this year and we worked with him and his staff volunteering at The Franciscan Center. We are fortunate to have Chef Steve as a part of the school community and look forward to his return for some future cooking classes.
