Conversation with EPA Scientists

A deep look at environmental justice issues was the topinc of this week’s “Conversation with…” We were joined by Environmental Protection Agency scientists Antonio Garcia and Dr. Michael Rose.

After student introductions, our guests talked about their educational and career journeys and what led them to work in the environmental field. Antonio grew up in Wisconsin and Mike in West Virginia. They both had a deep love for nature and the outdoors at the same time as living in heavily polluted areas with industrial waste and strip mining.

Each developed an interest in science that eventually found them working on water quality issues at the EPA. Not only did they speak about their work but also about the many careers in science available in this field. The students were especially impacted by the discussion on lead poisoning which remains a big concern in older cities like Baltimore.

After the Conversation, Mohamed and Ethan took them on a tour of the school and the students thanked them with a presentation of TCS mugs.

We were not only fortunate to have Antonio and Mike join us in Conversation, but also to have them as neighbors in Remington as well.
