DESCRIPTION:Imani Yasin is a hip-hop artist with an undeniable sound. After tapping into her passion for rapping\, singing\, and songwriting\, she has never ceased to improve her craft. As a native of Baltimore\, MD\, she brings an interesting perspective and unique experience to the world of music. Imani’s inspiration to create music is a direct result of her love for R&B\, but listening to rap’s coveted storytellers is what gave her the confidence to unapologetically share her own. \nImani started creating her own music in high school\, when she got a hold of a friend’s laptop and discovered GarageBand. Then\, it was just fun and games – but college grew her real passion for the craft. As a freshman at Philadelphia University\, she constantly recorded in a dorm room with one of her best friends. From there she began to explore various sounds\, fearlessly covering an array of topics – including her relationships\, struggles\, triumphs\, and quest to success. Now\, Imani has crafted a unique style of her own in which she incorporates both rapping and singing\, using elements of hip-hop\, R&B\, pop\, and house. \nShe has a voice that you instantly recognize\, but a versatility that keeps you on your toes. This versatility shows it’s face in her artistry\, but also in her life as a whole. In addition to being an independent artist\, Imani is also a youth advocate\, educator\, mentor\, and facilitator who has committed herself to leading and developing catalysts for positive change by working alongside Baltimore City youth and adults since 2007. Imani’s track record includes being an elementary school teacher\, race and equity facilitator\, high school program director\, mentoring consultant\, and athletic coach. She is currently the Director of Baltimore’s Project SERVE – a workforce development program that primarily serves individuals who are transitioning into communities post incarceration. \nAlthough a long time artist\, Imani is just beginning to make her mark with songs like “Lime Light” and “Watch Yo Mouth”. She began her career at Sesame Street producing and editing dozens of short films for the series and went on to co-create the pilot for “Animals\, Animals\, Animals”\, ABC’s Emmy and Peabody Award winning childrens’ series. She received a Video of the Year Grammy Award nomination for “Fun and Games” an interactive DVD for children featuring Bill Murray\, Meadowlark Lemon of the Harlem Globetrotters and prominent Broadway performers. She also created the first sports special for Nickelodeon\, “Circles and Spins” based on a figure skating competition. At CBS News\, she served as a chief editor for “60 Minutes” and “The Mike Wallace Profiles”. \nShe won her first National Emmy as an editor with the ABC Sports’ Olympic Unit and won another National Emmy as a Producer for ABC’s Nightline. For the PBS series\, Smithsonian World\, she won a National Emmy for her profile of Anne Morrow Lindbergh\, an honor shared with noted historian David McCullough. \nShe was later hired by legendary Creative Director\, Bill Backer as a producer/editor at McCann-Erickson Worldwide to work on the Coca-Cola account for two years. \nShe developed two stories that became CBS Movies\, Christmas Comes to Willow Creek and\, for Belzberg/Murphy Productions\, “Unforgiveable” focusing on domestic abuse of women. She was also a producer for Lifetime specials with Christie Brinkley\, Willow Bay and Elizabeth Vargas. \nShe served as a member of the original staff of Dateline NBC where she produced more than twenty major features and suggested the title for the series which was inspired by her time at Nightline. For Bloomberg TV\, she was the recipient of the LA Press Club Award for Best Profile\, an hour documentary on Rupert Murdoch. \nHer independent films including “They Are Their Own Gifts” (a trilogy featuring painter Alice Neel\, poet Muriel Rukeyser and choreographer Anna Sokolow) have been honored at the New York Film Festival as well as festivals in Berlin\, Edinburgh\, Chicago\, Houston and Denver. “Alice Neel-Painter” co-produced with Lucille Rhodes on the iconic artist was chosen for streaming on the Metropolitan Museum’s web site for their Out of the Archive Festival. The film celebrated the Met’s major exhibition of Neel’s work in 2021.
