International Women’s Day Conversation

We had a unique International Women’s Day event. Mothers of students and other women who are student sponsors were invited to be part of a special “Conversation with…” the students.

The purpose of the session was to learn about how the roles, laws, rights and opportunities for women have changed over the years and to explore what challenges still exist. It was interesting to hear from women from different backgrounds, cultural experiences and generations talk about both their common and unique experiences. We heard about growing up in Zambia, Mali and Kenya on the African continent as well as El Salvador and the United States in the AmerIcas. Everyone spoke about the positive changes for women as well as concerns about reversals in women’s rights. Several talked about problems at school and at work because of their gender from harassment to unequal treatment and opportunities. They also talked about the challenges of raising both young women and men in today’s society.

The discussion was very rich and the many questions of the students and their responses led to a very engaging and meaningful conversation. Everyone walked away a bit wiser and wanting more of this kind of interaction.

We are so fortunate to have such great women as part of our school community! Thank you Carla, Miriam, Kadidia, Leah, Kate, Jenae, Tyrice, Shawn and Penina!
