The students celebrated the Year of the Dragon at the Meyerhoff tonight. They welcomed the Lunar New Year at a special program put on by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The program started in the lobby in the hours before the concert with a number of Asian dance and drum groups. This was followed by a concert with a variety of symphonic works. One of the favorites featured an erhu, a Chinese two-stringed bowed musical instrument. The event was not only an enjoyable and educational on its own, but also enhanced our current Asian studies in the World Geography course. ...

THE DAWN ON MAN…The students were shown the nine-minute clip that opens the extraordinary film, “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Asked to share their reactions, many found it perplexing and overwhelming, as did QUINN. But she worked her way through it to deliver a thoughtful piece and a provocative ending. THE DAWN OF MAN The beginning of “2001: A Space Odyssey.” I honestly have never been more lost and unsettled before. It was so loud. All I could hear were the apes and the loud music. The tall black pillar is so strange, and I have no idea what to make of it. One of the apes started destroying the bones and then he came and beat the other ape with it. Somehow that’s supposed to be the Dawn of Mankind? I mean, I kind of understand, but I don’t at the same time. All I can think about is what’s going through the other apes' heads. They probably think Billy (that’s what I’ve named the ape with the bone) is unhinged. I mean seriously, what was wrong with him? In a way, I guess the black pillar is sort of like the “White Box” we wrote about. The tall black pillar drew the apes in, just like the white box in my other story drew me in. For some reason, after the appearance of the pillar, one of the apes starts thinking. He takes the bone and realizes he can use it to his advantage. After all of this time with these dried-up bones laying around, he realizes he can use...
On behalf of the entire TCS community, we welcome Professor Mikita Thompson. She is teaching a college level computer science course through the University of Baltimore at our school twice a week. This enables our students to pick up some useful skills and knowledge while adding to their college credits in our dual enrollment program. Professor Thompson brings her experience in computer science and cyber forensics as well as the application of these skills with her background in business and entrepreneurship. Our thanks to John Brenner and Philippia Richardson from the Early College Initiatives program at the University of Baltimore for once again providing a professor on site to teach our students....
Mike Gallo came back to the school for another "Conversation with" the students. Mike spoke about his life growing up in Chicago, troubles on the street and in school to becoming a national executive of the Minolta Corporation. He shared the many lessons he learned along the way including his strong beliefs in respecting every person and in hard work and dedication in every task a person takes on. The students always enjoy when Mike comes around the school and shares his stories....

A special shout out to Alumni and Board of Trustee members Dave Bayer and Donald Lacy for coming to the rescue. They were at the school yesterday afternoon and noticed a problem with a slippery and potentially dangerous situation with ice in the passageway between our buildings. Putting their minds together and working with old shelving and other materials around the school, they built a ramp that covers the area and lets the water pass under it. They built this ramp today and it works great! We are so fortunate to have such "can do" people as part of our school community who see a problem and don't wait for someone else. but step up to the plate and take it on. Thank you Dave and Donald for fixing this problem and for being such great examples! ...
