With a focus on the wonders and ways of travel, TCS Trustee Fleesie Hubbard shared a “Conversation with…” the students.  Fleesie talked about her many travels to over 30 countries that began when she was 12 years old on a class trip to Egypt.  In addition to her regular travels, Fleesie works as a medical researcher at the University of Maryland and formed a nonprofit with her colleagues that does an annual trip to medically underserved countries to perform cleft palate surgeries and to teach local doctors this procedure.

Encouraging the students to expand their travel experiences, Fleesie shared her private mantra of “Be Curious, Be Brave and Breathe.” The students talked about places they’ve been and where they look forward to going.  It was an enjoyable and engaging conversation.

Thank you Fleesie!

Denise Kumani Gantt, Director of Education and Resident Artist at The Lyric, brings her talents into TCS again this year with a new class.  Ms. Denise is focusing on the play – understanding this art form, its structure and elements.  This includes reading plays, watching performances and meeting with playwrights. The students are also doing journaling that will become the basis for a performance that they will do at the End of Year Ceremony.

Thank you Ms. Denise!

The students are excited to have Ms. Leandra’s weekly Art Class start up again for the new year. Leandra brings her talent, background as a commercial artist and 25 years of teaching experience at Loyola Blakefield into the classroom. Last year the students produced some remarkable work including their beautiful Impressionist paintings that were featured at the End of Year Ceremony. We are eager to witness the skills she develops in the students this year and the creativity she brings forward.

Thank you Ms. Leandra!

Ed & Mike Gavin have been working for weeks to replace the decking and railing on the back deck. The project included moving the greenhouse and building a new potting table. It looks beautiful and is much more functional.

Today, Hector and Karla volunteered their time to get the greenhouse set up and to plant the first set of crops. They planted food items that the students will eat at the school including broccoli, carrots and peppers and spices that we will sell to raise money for the project including basil, parsley, dill and cilantro.
Stay tuned for way more on this project!!

We had a really wonderful “Conversation with…” our friends from Center Stage. Janal Daniel, the Director of Learning and Social Accountability and Jeff Bazemore, Director of Production joined us. Janal has been active with our school for many years, but this was our first time meting and talking with Jeff.

A central topic of the Conversation was the play “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill which the students attended the day before. we explored the meaning that each student took away as well as many comments and questions about the production and what goes on behind the scenes to put it on.

We deeply appreciate our partnership with Center Stage and their generosity in having us join them several times a year to experience their plays. It has been a pleasure and a great experience for us to get to know so many of the staff over the years as well.
