A biology major and health researcher who switched careers midlife to interior design was our “Conversation with…” guest today.  Shalon Edwards came into the school with Beth Pointer as part of the monthly Done Construction seminar.  Shalon shared her educational and career journey and the joy in following your passions and importance of doing work that fulfills you. She also talked about the many skills involved and careers available in interior decorating.

Shalon shared her first project in woodworking where she made a beautiful inlaid box all made from wood that resembles a gift package.

This was an interesting conversation and we thank Shalon for sharing her time with us and to Beth and the women at Done for constantly expanding our knowledge and exposure!

We had a far reaching “Conversation with…” April Doherty. April works in the States Attorney’s office with a concentration on dealing with animal abuse cases. She talked about the link between animal abuse and domestic abuse and other violence. April is also a breast cancer survivor/thriver and shared her perspective and experiences on overcoming this and a host of other challenges in her life. One unique aspect of April’s life is that she has worked on farms here in Maryland but also across the globe in England and Zimbabwe!
April was last at the school in 2017 talking with a class and we are thankful and glad she came back to share her stories with the students once again!

We had a special Conversation with Dr. Paul Sack today. Dr. Sack is the Chief in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital, the MedStar Regional Director for Endocrinology in Baltimore as well as the Chief of Staff at Union Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Sack spoke about his growing up in Bangladesh where his father was working on treating people with infectious disease, This fueled his desire from an early age to become a doctor. He shared his educational and career journeys including a study abroad in Cote d’Ivoire and graduation from the University of Maryland Medical School. He offered very concrete advice on everything from school-work-life balance to study skills and work habits.
The main reason he was asked to come to the school at this time is because the biology students are studying the endocrine system. The students were prepared with many questions to enhance their understanding.
This is the second time Dr. Sack has generously shared time from his busy schedule with the students. We took a lot away from his time with us and appreciate his kindness.

Parent of TCS Student Kendall and CEO of nonprofit organization ONE More..ONE Less Mentoring was our Conversation guest today. Minister Brian spoke about his life growing up in Baltimore and his many challenges with twists and turns along the way. He talked about overcoming mistakes as a youth and severe health challenges to his present work mentoring young people from tough circumstances and exposing them to the environment and natural world. He runs an organization that takes young people out on the water to study and research the environment as well as learning how to fish and supply this food to their families. The Conversation was full of life lessons illustrated by overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities.

Thank you Minister Brian for sharing your time with us and for the Hip Hop chicken you brought for lunch!
