Check out this week’s TCS Student News with a lead story on the environmental impact of the train derailment in Ohio. Hear about some great conversations this week including with Ms. Giovanna, owner of Gia’s restaurant in Little Italy where we were hosted by Jean Gallo and Val Meola from ACIM. We also had a “Conversation with…” Megan Emdad and Christian from Gary Bozel & Associates.  It was a busy week with a financial literacy seminar and more!

There was a lively “Conversation with…” Megan Emdad and Christian Malone today from the accounting firm of Gary R. Bozel & Associates (GRB&A). The discussing included a lot about finance, careers in the accounting and business fields, and much about paths to success and fulfillment in the world of work. Gary Bozel and Megan have advised the school for many years now and handle all of the accounting needs beyond the very capable bookkeeping of Ms. Leah, our own volunteer  office manager.

It was a lively discussion and the students had loads of questions after devouring the great lunch which Megan and Christian brought.. We appreciate our long relationship with GRB&A and the generous sharing of time by Megan and Christian.

The students had an amazing experience at Cafe Gia’s Restaurant in Little Italy today. We were invited to lunch by the ACIM of Maryland- American Citizens for Italian Matters and were joined by members and longtime friends of the school Jean Gallo and Valerie Meola.
While enjoying a delicious meal, Giovanna Aquia Blatterman shared stories with us about her journey with her family from Sicily through Ellis Island to Baltimore. She talked about the challenges her family faced and the successes they have had while staying rooted in Baltimore’s Little Italy including the founding of Cafe Gia’s. Giovanna also shared about the multicultural heritage of Sicilians and its ties to people and cultures throughout Africa and Europe.
Several students who were the first generation of their family to be born in this country shared their common experiences and all shared about why they chose The Community School.
We are thankful for the enduring support that our school gets from the Italian Community who is always eager to reach back and give a hand up to those trying to improve their lives. Today, we are especially thankful for Jean, Val and the members of ACIM for enabling this wonderful experience and to Giovanna for her delicious food, kind hospitality and generous sharing of stories.

Check out this week’s edition of TCS Student News to get the latest on the earthquake and rescue efforts in Turkey and Syria. News around the school includes a Conversation with journalist Rona Kobell and another with Cardiologist Dr. Steve Plantholt.  There also was a special tribute to Eddie Conway on his recent passing.

Spencer completed the education he began at The Community School but had not finished. He completed the few credits that he needed while working aa full time job and running his own recording and clothing business. We congratulate Spencer on this wonderful accomplishment!

In our health course, the students are currently learning about the human body and its systems. We were fortunate to have Dr. Steve Plantholt, the former head of cardiology at St. Agnes Hospital speak with the class. The students peppered him with a far reaching set of questions with topics ranging from his career to new medical technologies. This added interest and insight into their current studies on the cardiovascular system.  Special thanks to Dr. Plantholt for coming in and to former St. Agnes President and TCS volunteer Ken Bancroft for making the arrangements.
