Having a car is a goal of most teenagers.  This was the topic in this month’s Financial Literacy Seminar brought to the school by Berman McAleer. Each student researched and picked a car and then learned about all of the costs associated with that decision – purchase, loan interest, maintenance and insurance.

This was another valuable life skills lesson brought to us by BMc under the leadership of Kathleen Gower. This session Kathleen was assisted by fellow coworker and frequent TCS visitor, Adaiha Montgomery, teaching this class.

We deeply appreciate our friends at Berman McAleer and the vital life lessons they add to our students’ education at TCS.

We had an amazing seminar with the Maryland Center for History & Culture on Enslavement and Resistance in Maryland (MCHC).  MCHC Digital Learning Manager Tyler Osborne conducted this fascinating learning experience examining the history of slavery in Maryland and the heroes among the formerly enslaved who resisted.

Using some of the many objects held in the collection of MCHC, Tyler utilized original writings, documents, art and photographs to teach the students how to examine primary sources to uncover historical facts and context.  This seminar was conducted using ZOOM though we would like to visit  MCHC before the year is out.  We appreciate Tyler who taught a seminar to our students last year as well and MCHC for bringing this important topic into our classroom.

The administration’s Immigration policy and the protests against them are the lead story in this week’s TCS Student News. News around the school includes a special educational for Holocaust Remembrance Day, the new semester of college courses, a spotlight on Professor Omar Farooqui, a Conversation with Rob Commodari and our new partnership with the Maryland Institute College of Art,

This edition was produced by Danny Buck and Madisyn Hall with technical support from Mohamed Cisse.

We are excited to announce our new partnership with the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). A group of MICA students – Alex Ozga, Anan Haque, Caroline Christenen, Ken De La Cruz and Kira Bell – will be coming in every Tuesday under the leadership of  teacher Rachel Valsing to hold an art class with our students.

We held the first class this week that was largely used for introductions and the start of their first art project. The MICA students were also given a tour of the school by TCS students Karla and Khori.

Our special thanks to Vanessa Lopez, practicum coordinator at MICA, for making this possible.

Author, speaker and businessman Rob Commodari was our recent Conversation guest. Rob shared the stories of overcoming personal struggles, the development of his strong work ethic starting as a preteen and his deeply held spiritual beliefs. The students were keenly interested in the many lessons he shared and a very rich discussion ensued.

Rob is the author of Better Than you Think: Developing Awareness for a More Fulfilling Life and challenged the students to raise their awareness and be more conscious about decisions that they make. We are very thankful for his generous sharing of time with us and looking forward to a return visit.

This week’s edition of TCS Student News examines the tragic deportation of Afghani refugees from Iran and Pakistan. News around the school includes Conversations with Dr. Al Scott, Jim Burger and Tyler Hoffberger as well as a report on the latest financial literacy seminar and more.

This episode was researched and produced by Ruth Rivas and Judah Patterson with production assistance from Hector Rivas.
