Visit to LaRae Amoor Universe

A feast for the ears, eyes and soul. That's what today's field trip to LaRae Amoor Universe was for us at the invitation of founder Antwan Hawkins also known as Greeyo. A cultural oasis blooms in an unassuming building in the 2200 block of Maryland Avenue. After preliminary greetings where everyone introduced themselves with a twist that included a little known personal "fun fact", a musical performance ensued. With Cavon on drums, Eric on keyboards and guitar, and Jordan aka Groovy, Kevin aka A.S.E. and Greeyo on vocals we were entertained, educated and inspired on an impromptu musical journey in an intimate performance space. Joined by fellow studio member and videographer Tyus aka Mr. Visionaries, we then engaged in a Q & A and discussion. It was filled with personal stories and perspectives full of life lessons about pursuing your dreams and working collaboratively to bring something new into the world. The students were especially inspired that these men, not that much older than them, were using their talent and determination to make their dreams real. How to choose a bank and the value of compounding interest on savings accounts were just two of the valuable insights shared in this month's Financial Literacy Seminar. Led by Kathleen Gower with Terri Cook and Matthew Hess, this important life skills seminar is brought to the students by wealth management firm Berman McAleer. The students were enthralled by how just a modest amount of money put aside each month can grow over a lifetime. They peppered our presenters with questions about banking and saving and are looking forward to Part II of this seminar next month. We are thankful to all the Kathleen, Terri and Matt and all the folks at Berman McAleer for this series and the delicious lunch as well! ...

Yesterday was not only another busy day at the school, but also we were represented at two different events as well. Janiah and Karla attended "The Gathering", a networking event held by the Baltimore Children and Youth Fund. BCYF promotes youth serving organizations and youth empowerment in Baltimore City. We were well represented and many contacts were made with other groups. Madison and Khori ran a table at a High School Fair at Roland Park Elementary/Middle School. They talked to prospective students to answer their questions about TCS while sharing their own experiences. We are proud of our students and the way they represent themselves and the school. ...

Conversation with Author Kate Anderson Brower

New York Times best selling author Kate Anderson Brower visited the school today for a special Conversation. The students are studying the U.S. Government this year and are reading her fascinating and accessible book The Hill: Inside the Secret World of the U.S. Capitol. The students had loads of questions from their reading of the book as well as about her experience covering Presidents, First Ladies along with the regular people - cooks, carpenters, Capitol police - who work behind the scenes.. Ms. Brower was keenly interested in the students lives and views. It was an extremely engaging and interesting conversation and Ms. Brower was very generous with her time staying well past the scheduled hour and a half. Her visit included a lengthy tour of the school building and taking the time to personalize and sign each of the students' copy of The Hill. Kate Anderson Brower is the author of The Residence and First Women, as well as Team Of Five, First In Line, and the children’s book Exploring the White House. She is a CNN contributor and she covered the Obama administration for Bloomberg News. She is also a former CBS News staffer and Fox News producer. Kate has written for the New York Times, Vanity Fair, and the Washington Post. It was a real honor to have Ms. Brower visit with us. Welcome Allison Brown and the Young Playwrights Seminar

Through the kindness of Baltimore Center Stage, the Young Playwrights Seminar is back again this year! This seminar which runs weekly through the first week of January teaches the students the structure and art of playwriting that culminates in each student producing a 10 minute play. The plays are then entered into a regional contest where the plays chosen are professionally produced and performed at Center Stage. The Community School has had two students in the last several years whose works have been chosen - Ronan Guilfoyle and Hector Rivas. We are very fortunate to have Artist Allison Brown teaching this seminar. Ms. Brown is a multi-talented artist, writer, designer and entrepreneur and brings her enthusiasm and gift for dynamic storytelling to our students. Thank you Baltimore Center Stage! We are excited to work with Allison. Keep your eyes out for more on this adventure!...

Student Honors Veterans

On Veterans Day, 12th grade student Rhys Guilfoyle honored those who served our country in a special way. Rhys was a critical part of a project to plant 12 trees in honor of fallen veterans at the Memorial Grove of Remembrance located in Druid Hill Park. In a touching ceremony at the site, Rhys read a tribute to veterans followed by a sharing from 3 Gold Star mothers who lost their sons in combat. Rhys has been a long time Boy Scout and joined in this project as part of his effort to become an Eagle Scout. He organized fellow scouts and others to join in to this special effort along with the Department of Recreation and Parks and Tree Baltimore. We are proud of Rhys's efforts in honoring our veterans. ...

In Honor of Mary Pat

Mary Pat Clarke, a good friend and long time member of the TCS community, has passed. From our earliest beginning, Mary Pat was always an advocate for our school and all of the students in it. She came to know each student throughput the years, offering encouragement and personal support. She brought many political leaders and speakers to the school, developed an co-taught a class, and spoke to the class more times than I can count. She fought for us in zoning hearings, helped resolve conflicts with the city when needed, stood beside us as we worked to improve education and other issues and was just a steady and consistent presence over nearly 5 decades. She will be missed by so many and our life, though not the same without her, is so much better because she was in it....
