It was a terrific Sponsor Meeting tonight. We reviewed all of the activities in the 2nd Trimester and honored all of the students for their dedication, engagement and achievements. We salute Karla, Hector Kendall, E:Ethan, Danny, Madison, Rhys, Chase, Jayla and Ethan! Special honors to Jayla, Ethan, Rhys and Chase for the challenging task of making the Honor Roll. We also recognize the great job our teachers and seminar leaders are doing - Don, Peggy, Eduardo, Leandra, Denise, Ebony along with Kathleen and our friends at Berman McAleer and Beth and the women of Done Construction. Our thanks to our amazing support staff especially Leah, but including Alyssa, John and Ken. Deep gratitude to all of the volunteers who supply lunches, pantry foods and help out around the school. Our friends from Done Construction were back at the school this month for a fresh home repair workshop. Today’s seminar was on all the ins and outs of painting. A good amount of time was spent on explaining all of the tools and tricks of the trade. Then everyone went outside to use what they learned on the practice wall built for this occasion! So far this year the students have learned about tools, electrical repairs and some plumbing as well. Thank you Beth, Sarah Junior, Catesby, Kristin and Sarah Senior...

Today, we welcomed back regular guest teacher Dr. Alan Scott, Professor of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He answered a broad range of questions from the students about the immune system, vaccines, various diseases as well as breakthroughs in research and treatment. Dr. Scott has been coming to the school for years several times each term to teach special seminars on issues such as COVID, monkeypox, and herd immunity and other sessions that are just question and answer periods. Today's session was part of the current health curriculum on the body's systems and was both enlightening and sparked the student's interest even more. Thank you Dr. Scott....

Three time national Emmy Award winning producer/director/writer/editor Margaret Murphy was our guest for our weekly “Conversation with…” series today. Ms. Murphy spoke about her early work as one of the first women producers in network sports as well as one of the original staff for the Nightline Program with Ted Koppel. Her long career continues as she still freelances projects. The students were particularly interested in her work on children’s programming including Sesame Street and in the many prominent people in the news she worked with or interviewed. Ms. Murphy even brought in one of her Emmy statues for the students to see and hold. It was a real honor having this living legend at the school humbly and graciously sharing so many interesting stories. ...

The students had an amazing experience at Cafe Gia's Restaurant in Little Italy today. We were invited to lunch by the ACIM of Maryland- American Citizens for Italian Matters and were joined by members and longtime friends of the school Jean Gallo and Valerie Meola. While enjoying a delicious meal, Giovanna Aquia Blatterman shared stories with us about her journey with her family from Sicily through Ellis Island to Baltimore. She talked about the challenges her family faced and the successes they have had while staying rooted in Baltimore's Little Italy including the founding of Cafe Gia's. Giovanna also shared about the multicultural heritage of Sicilians and its ties to people and cultures throughout Africa and Europe. Several students who were the first generation of their family to be born in this country shared their common experiences and all shared about why they chose The Community School. We are thankful for the enduring support that our school gets from the Italian Community who is always eager to reach back and give a hand up to those trying to improve their lives. Today, we are especially thankful for Jean, Val and the members of ACIM for enabling this wonderful experience and to Giovanna for her delicious food, kind hospitality and generous sharing of stories. ...
