TCS student Aidan McIntosh won 1st place in the Advanced Division at the Maryland Chess Tournament held at Poly on Saturday, February 17th. This win places him at a national rating of 1268 junior varsity. Aidan is preparing for the Nationals in Atlanta on April 6-8.  He has attended previous Nationals in Ohio, Tennessee, and Indiana. We are all proud of you, Aidan!...

The students had the amazing opportunity to hear music rooted in East Africa at the Creative Alliance in Highlandtown today. The leader of the band, Alsarah, was born in Khartoum, Sudan and grew up in Yemen and then settled in Brooklyn, New York.  Her music reflects those deep roots and diverse experiences. Student Aidan McIntosh described the music as "powerful" and other students commented on the complex rhythms and getting lost in the music. After the performance, the students had a chance to talk with Alsarah and the members of the band that included  Rami Al Aasser, Mawuena Kodjovi, Nahid, and Brandon Terzic. Much thanks to Josh Kohn and the Creative Alliance for making this possible and to Fleesie Hubbard for always scouting new opportunities for exposure for the students. Learning about the adaptations and experiences of a person who lost his sight was a theme of today's conversation with Tommy Gibson. Facing imminent death from AIDS, Tommy survived and rebounded because he was fortunate to find a doctor who conducted one of the early medicine trials for the time before the current life saving drugs were available.  In this same period he lost sight in both eyes. This life changing experience brought him from a successful career in computer engineering at Smith-Barney through a journey that led him to his current work as a massage therapist.  Tommy was accompanied by his service dog, Argo. "I have a new understanding for completely blind people and how they get things done," said student Spencer Erdossy....

The school was honored by a visit from teacher and author Nonieqa Ramos on the same day that her book The Disturbed Girl's Dictionary was released to the public. Noni shared insights into her book and the writing process.  The school was able to get an early release of the book and the students have been reading it all week both in class and at home.  This young adult novel has the universal endorsement of every student in our school. Student Daj'a White said, "I really feel like this is a great book because It speaks the truth and also makes me think about myself." Noni share her time generously encouraging the students to share their writing and commenting on each one. She also took the time to talk with each student individually. Thanks also go to Martha Marani and The Ivy Bookshop for arranging this memorable visit. The book is available locally at The Ivy Bookshop and also through Amazon....

Teacher Tom Culotta was the guest speaker before the American Citizens for Italian Matters at Fazzini's Taverna in Cockeysville.  ACIM President Kathy Rescigno has visited the school and interviewed Tom in a talk show format tonight. The members were keenly interested in the work of the school and asked many questions.  ACIM delivered a large shipment of student supplies and pantry items at the beginning of the school year and is considering year-round support including providing a monthly lunch for the students. The Italian community in Baltimore has been a major supporter of the school for many years through a variety of fraternal organizations that includes ACIM, the Associated Italian-American Charities and The Appian Society. We are very grateful for their support....
