[caption id="attachment_1759" align="alignleft" width="302"] Ron Halbright[/caption] Regaling the students with stories of his climb up Mount Kilimanjaro, Ron Halbright enjoyed lunch and conversation at the school today. He also shared stories of his organization that is engaged throughout Europe dealing with prejudice and racism especially against immigrants. Ron, who now lives in Switzerland, used to live and work in Baltimore on a jobs and weatherization project with the school.  The students were especially impacted by the story of Ron's grandparents who were in the Holocaust during World War II.  This sharing of personal stories is a key component of the education at The Community School. [caption id="attachment_1674" align="alignleft" width="300"] Billboard[/caption] When you're driving by the corner of 36th & Falls Road in Hampden, be sure and look up to see our new billboard. It was designed by the creative team of Don & Sande Riesett, long time TCS volunteers.  Don developed the idea from a pattern he noticed in working with the students on their writing where they often mentioned that they are in the school because they want to "Be Somebody." There are posters with the design popping up all over the area as we seek out students for the new term beginning in the fall. Thank you Don & Sande for developing this campaign and to you both and all of the other kind people who put up the resources to publicize it....

[caption id="attachment_1679" align="alignleft" width="300"] Fumiko Campbell[/caption] The students were privileged today to  be invited to lunch by friend of the school Fumiko Campbell.  Ms. Fumiko was born and raised in Japan, but came to live here after marrying Arthur Campbell. She has been involved in community service for many years and sits on the board of the Maryland Science Center.  Most of her activities center around St. Agnes Hospital where she once worked and has been a volunteer putting in more than 25,000 hours. After lunch, Fumiko shared her traditional culture with the students showing them various items from Japan.  It was a terrific experience and enthralled the students....

Members of the school community had the opportunity to attend the Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson show this evening at the Baltimore Arena. The students had a terrific time and we all thank the organization Tickets for Kids out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for arranging for us to be able to attend the show....

[caption id="attachment_1688" align="alignleft" width="300"] JHU-CSI[/caption] Weekly science labs conducted by the Johns Hopkins University Community School Initiative (CSI) are continuing this semester.  This student group made up of both undergraduate and graduate students has been active for 5 years enhancing the science education at TCS.  Labs include biology, chemistry and physics and are always a highlight of the academic week.  We deeply appreciate their efforts and that of the Center for Social Concern at JHU for their support....

[caption id="attachment_1685" align="alignleft" width="300"] Dhoruba Moore, Paul Coates, and Bob Boyle[/caption] Advisory Board member and decades long supporter of TCS, Paul Coates, visited the school today.  He brought with him two special guests, long time activist Dhoruba Moore and Civil rights attorney Bob Boyle.  They were in town for the long-awaited release of Eddie Conway who had been wrongly imprisoned for over 40 years.  During their visit they took the time to learn about each of the students and their goals for the future as well as sharing some of the history of the Black Panther Party.  We appreciated the time they spent with us on this busy day....

[caption id="attachment_1682" align="alignleft" width="300"] AIAC 2013[/caption] Students and volunteers from the school were the guests of Tom & Jacque Iacoboni at the Annual Associated Italian-American Charities dinner tonight.  For nearly 10 years the AIAC through Tom Iacoboni has made a donation to the school.  This group was formed by Italian immigrants and their children at the conclusion of World War II to help provide relief for the displaced, hungry and homeless, especially children.  It has grown over the years to be an organization that raises money from its members and through fundraisers to support dozens of organizations of all nationalities most of whom are in the Baltimore area. We had a terrific dinner the Little Italy Lodge of the Sons of Italy followed by presentation of the awards.  Not only is their support appreciated, but we appreciate their example of giving back....

We were fortunate to have David, son of Rena Smith, come in to share his artistic talents with the students today.  David is a frequent visitor to the school and when he stopped in earlier in the week to share some are he had created with fall leaves, everyone was impressed.  David agreed to teach the students how to make their own and even brought in some incredibly beautiful and unique leaves to share with the class. Everyone had a great time and took home their own creations to share with their families.  Thanks, David and Rena!...
