This week's TCS Student News by Karla Rivas and Kennedy Lewis is packed with insights an information on what happened around the school this past week. They start with a main story that updates us on the Presidential election and the prominent issues involved. TCS Studies include reporting and commentary on a very special "Conversation with.." women from TCS on International Women's Day. We also had a special Conversation with Ron Halbright who works with refugees in Europe. Plus there are interesting updates on the many seminars and events in the last week from lamp making with Done Construction to art and the Sponsor meeting to Shadow Day....

Ron Halbright, a good friend of the school for many years, came in for a special conversation today. Ron was a community worker and used to live in Baltimore but has lived in Switzerland for the last 34 years. There he is engaged in social justice work including work with refugees and other disenfranchised people. Ron's work is influenced by his family's persecution and losing many relatives during the Holocaust and that his parents were refugees themselves as they came to the United States. His work today includes facilitating dialogue between Jews and Muslims. Ron attended our current events class and joined in the conversation about the news of the day. It is always a pleasure to have Ron visit the school when he is in town and we appreciate him sharing his work with us. ...

Electrical wiring was the focus of this week's seminar run by the Done Construction. The students continued to work on constructing their lamps and did they electrical wiring. They learned about wire gauges, how to use wire strippers, wiring electrical plugs and assembling the electrical parts of the lamp. The students are excited with their progress as this project nears completion. Thank you Done Construction!...

As the 2nd trimester came to a close and students have entered into their final grading period of the school year, students, families and sponsors met together.  A brief update report was given and then there was a lively discussion about the school going forward and the need and opportunity for everyone to be positively engaged. All of the students were honored with special commendations going to Rhys, Karla, Ruth and Quinn for reaching the challenging goal of being on the Honor Roll and Danny, Ethan, Karla and Ruth having perfect attendance.  ...

Who committed the murder? This was the problem to solve in the special biology lab conducted by Morgan University Biology Professor Dr. Yuejin Li. This special 2 hour lab began with a presentation on genetics and blood typing before getting into the crime solving. The students learned how to test for blood type and Rh factor on materials from the "crime scene." They emerged with strong circumstantial evidence that it was the electrician. Professor Li talked about her life and educational journey. She was born in China and studied both there and in the United States. She has been at Morgan University since 2017 where she both teaches and is a research scientist into the cardiovascular system. Dr. Li generously shared her time and knowledge with us. Her thorough, clear and accessible teaching style was greatly appreciated by all of the students. Last month, we reached out to the Morgan University Science Department in hopes of building a relationship that would bring science labs into TCS. Professor Li quickly and eagerly replied and has pledged to continue to help us build these ties. We are very thankful for her and look forward to the future. ...

We were honored to have Marc Steiner join us yesterday to share his knowledge and perspective on the conflict in Israel and Palestine. Marc's knowledge is both personal and profound. He has family members from Poland who perished in the Holocaust and others that were living in the kibbutz attacked on October 7th. He also has friends in Palestine and has been a life long human and civil rights organizer. Marc is a prominent radio and media figure in Baltimore that has given him the opportunity to interview and have dialogue with people on the many sides of this issue. A key characteristic of TCS students is their interest in and knowledge of what is going on in the community and the world. They have been following this issue since long before this current crisis and were keenly interested in learning more, especially personal stories. Marc was a great source and answered all of their questions and engaged in a meaningful conversation and discussion with the students. We are grateful for Marc Steiner's many years of demonstrated commitment to justice and improving the lives of people and his generous sharing of time with us once again. ...
