What an experience students from The Community School had today!  The class spent the morning at Baltimore City Hall starting off with a tour, meeting the Mayor, President of the City Council, City Comptroller, Finance Director and a host of other elected and government officials. During a Board of Estimates meeting, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake took time from the agenda to speak about the long history of The Community School and congratulating the students on their achievements. After a tour with the City Hall curator, the students went to work in City Council Chambers where City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke conducted the last session in her Baltimore seminar continuing the class that the students have had with her for the past several weeks. The students had two mock sessions where they exchanged roles as city council members and citizens presenting testimony. Special thanks to Council President Jack Young for taking the time to talk with the students and for making an on-the-spot major contribution to the school. We are beyond grateful to have Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke as a part of the school for so many years and for setting up this unique and amazing experience....

TCS Student Natasha Martin was on WYPR radio as part of her work with Wide Angle Youth Media. Natasha has been working on a project that linked her with students in Bulgaria.  She wrote and read a piece composed from her knowledge comparing youth and education issues in Baltimore with those of her her new friends across the Atlantic.  You can listen to her broadcast by clicking the play button below. We are very proud of her!     [audio mp3="https://tcshighschool.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Humanities-Conn-Wide-Angle-Media-Natasha-011515-Final-Audio-2.mp3"][/audio]...

The students have been preparing for the spring planting season by sewing liners for old milk crates that will become planters.  Under the guidance of our greenhouse educator Molly McCullagh, the students learned how to sew landscape fabric to give new life to these old crates and expand our growing potential. The class will soon start spring planting both to produce food for the school and to sell plants to raise money to keep the project going and encourage neighbors and friends to grow their own food....

The school has initiated a new program called "15 Minutes". This is an opportunity for students to make a 15 minute presentation about a topic that interests them or about someone/something that is important to them. Today Dyrrell Moon, looking sharp in his science lab coat, presented about noted astrophysicist Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson. Dyrrell is interested in pursuing this career and explained to the class an outline of what is involved. He performed an experiment and also showed a brief video on the origins of the universe. It was a terrific presentation and great start to this new program....

Co-Anchors Kelsey Larrimore and Daj'a White recorded the 2nd news broadcast of the new weekly feature, TCS Student news. They covered stories that included the recent murder of student protestors in Mexico and an update on the kidnapping of the schoolgirls by Boko Haram.  They even gave a weekend weather forecast and a health report....

The 2nd Sponsor Meeting of the school year will be held on Wednesday, October 15th at 7:00. All are welcome....

Students and sponsors are selling candy bars to raise money for the school. They have a great assortment of the most popular candy bars and snacks for only $1 each....

Tonight, the first two student-sponsor meetings of the new year were held.  Each of these new students and their families displayed such eagerness and enthusiasm for their future at The Community School.  It is a reminder of the great potential that exists in our youth, their families, and our community.  We are not a big school, but I wouldn't trade this new group of students for any others.  It's going to be a terrific year!...

We are excited to announce that incoming 9th grader Dyrrell Moon has been awarded a full scholarship to participate in the 2014 High School Conservatory at Single Carrot Theatre.  This theatre group is newly located in our home community of Remington and has been in conversation with The Community School for months about how our organizations can work together. The conservatory is a two week program whose purpose is "to enrich young actors with the building blocks needed to become well-rounded theatre artists." We are very thankful to Jessica Garrett and all of the folks at Single Carrot Theatre.  Congratulations Dyrrell!...
