Friend of the school and regular TCS guest teacher, Dr. Al Scott, professor of Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health came in Wednesday to hold a seminar on monkeypox. The students were keenly interested in this disease that has been in the news a lot lately. Dr. Scott explained its origins, symptoms, and prevention as well as what is known about how it spreads. The students asked a lot of great questions. Dr. Scott always leaves us so well informed about immunology and communicable diseases in the news.

We were honored today to have alumni Janiah Tillery join us for the 2nd session in our weekly “Conversation with…” series of the new school year. Janiah is in her second year as a prestigious Fulbright Scholar teaching young people in an indigenous village in Taiwan. She graduated from The Community School in 2016 and is a member of the school’s Board of Trustees. Janiah earned her degree at Roanoke College where she did a study abroad in Taiwan as part of her language interest in Mandarin. Janiah has lived in Taiwan for almost 3 years now. The students enjoyed talking with Janiah about her experiences at TCS and shared their own stories as well. There was keen interest in what it’s like to live in another country and to be away from home for so long. We are proud of you Janiah and appreciate your continued support of the current students and the school.

We celebrated Mexican Independence Day today with a terrific presentation by student Iliana Benitez-Cruz. Iliana spoke about the history of her mother country and shared some of the cultural traditions. She came dressed in clothes that she got on the visit to her family in Oaxaca when she was 10 years old. Iliana keeps her family’s traditions alive as part of a Mexican folk dancing group. We are proud to have so many people from the Mexican community as part of our school family.

This first edition of TCS Student News was produced by Jayla Nickens-Gill and Ethan Christou. The lead story was on the anniversary of 9-11 with TCS stories covering the many happenings in the first week of the school year. Technical support from Iliana Benitez-Cruz.

We had an informative, engaging and fun workshop today brought to us by our friends from Done Construction! This innovative, all women led and operated home improvement company did the first of their monthly workshops of the year for the students..
In addition to the workshop, each student was given a tool bag to take home that included a lot of basics and a very cool battery powered drill/driver all complements of Done Construction! This workshop focused on tools and their use.
Thank you Beth, Sarah Sr., Kristin, Sarah Jr. and Catesby!

It was really terrific to see several of our friends from Berman McAleer yesterday. Joe McAleer, Patrick Monaghan and Kathleen Gower came in for a “Conversation with…” They shared stories about their education and career paths and the lessons learned along the way. It was a lively session with a lot of questions and comments from students and guests alike.
