Today, we had a fascinating “Conversation with…” Ed Meade about his recent 3 week long trip to Argentina and Antarctica. He shared many photos and maps of his journey including explanations of the harsh, but well preserved and stunning ecosystem there. Mr. Meade is a teacher at Mother Seton Academy and a sponsor for one of our students. Thanks Ed!

Through a partnership with the University of Baltimore, students have successfully completed Math 115 Introductory Statistics and earned college credits. We are deeply thankful to U of B, their dual enrollment team – John Brenner and Philippia Richardson, and Professsor Adejokea Ajayi who taught the course at the school with professionalism and care. This course was open for all 10th grade through 12th grade students – ALL of whom passed. Congratulations to our hard working students!

We welcomed Class of 2010 TCS Alum Evan Green back to the school today.  Evan has been in the U.S. Air Force for the last 6 years where he has reached the rank of Sergeant.  He is currently stationed in Nevada though he also did a nearly 3 year stint at Aviano Air Base in Italy. Evan talked extensively about his travel and military experience. The students were keenly interested in his time at The Community School and growing up in Remington although discussion extended into favorite musical artists and sports figures. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the conversation with another proud graduate of The Community School.

Adding to the usefulness of a TCS education, the students were certified in CPR today.  Special thanks to long time Advisory Board member Tom Iacoboni who enabled this class to happen.  Iacoboni Site Specialist certified safety Officer Dennis Grochowski conducted the class that also covered basic first aid.  Thank you!

High prices in this holiday season affecting your family? Check out what this week’s news producers, Chase Christou and Hector Rivas, have to say about it. Hear about the very special conversation with former U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, a special showing of the Native American film Smoke Signals, this week’s seminars and more.

We had the amazing honor of having a Conversation with former U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski today. She talked about her childhood growing up in Highlandtown and her lifetime of service to the people of Baltimore and beyond as a member of the City Council, U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Barbara Mikulski was the first women in Maryland to be elected to the U.S. Senate where she served for 30 years.
The students asked questions about the issues that they are concerned with like women’s rights and violence, but also about her growing up and early experiences. Senator Mikulski was generous with her time and spoke candidly with the students. She commented on how well informed the students are and how much she enjoyed the conversation as well.
Our deepest thanks to Senator Mikulski for her years of service and her kindness to us. And special thanks to former Baltimore City Council President Mary Pat Clarke for helping to arrange this visit and for joining us for the conversation.
